"If you ain't first, you're last." - Ricky Bobby
Hello. It's a short entry for you today. One half of my host team wasn't feeling very well so we spent a bit of time trying to make her feel better. This involved going to the supermarket several times. It's all an adventure for me, so going to the supermarket in a foreign country several times in a day is actually more exciring than it initially sounds. It gave me a chance to observe the locals in their natural environment and wonder at the completely different but also quite similar psychology involved in selling things and laying out a shop. First of all we got up around 7 and went to the supermarket in the truck.
Snowy truck
It had snowed overnight. Not seriously, just a light dusting of very fine snow (it was -13 celcius again last night). The snow didn't really lie, just collected in wee piles blown about by the wind.
After we returned with supplies for the needy, Blair and I went for Breakfast.
I had an Elevated Egg Sandwich
I'm not sure what they use to smash the Avocado but whatever it was it made for a very tasty breakfast sandwich.
After breakfast we went to the supermarket for more supplies, and for a birthday card for my neice.
"It's LaCroix, sweetie."
I saw some juice which instantly made me think of Patsy and Eddie.
Honey bunch!
We bought the card, and some stamps, delivered the other supplies back to the house and then I used the United States Postal Service to send the card. To do this you put the letter in your own mailbox at the end of your drive and put the wee flag up. This tells Postman Pat that you've something to take away. As he is passing your house to drop off your incoming mail in his correct hand drive Post Van (correct hand drive means he can reach into the mailbox from the drivers seat) he picks it up and takes it to the post office so you don't have to find a post box.
After the mail experience we went to Beercade, which is a bar with a load of 1980s and 1990s arcade machines in it. It was happy hour so you got 4x quarters if you bought a beer. We had a beer and played some Mortal Kombat and Tekken before going off to find some lunch.
Tekken 5
This shop was across the street from Beercade. I don't know what it was selling. I think it might have been a bar.
Target.
After lunch we went to Super target. It was big. I just wanted to see what it was like. It was like an entire UK retail park in one shop.
Target was near a branch of The Home Depot, which is like B&Q but seemingly without the massive markup on everything. We bought a new Garage Door opener and spent the rest of the afternoon fitting it.

We finished with the garage door opener just in time to sit down and have our evening meal and watch something called a Super Bowl on the telly which is a game were around 200 people dress up in Lycra and run about playing chases. They stop running about every 15-30 seconds so that there can be some adverts, or sometimes an analysis of the last bit of running around by a panel of former Lycra wearers. Mostly they stop for adverts though. Not my thing, but seems to be very popular here and I am glad that I can say that I watched one.
