So, everything seems to be illegal in Massachusetts. Including not picking up your dog's shit while it is attached to a leash not more than 6ft in length. You can go to jail for this.
Being British, I wasn't going to mention it, but I spent all day walking round the city and I still don't understand pedestrian crossings.
At home, when you press the button at a pedestrian crossing and the green man appears, the traffic is stopped and you are in no danger of being run over. However, just to keep you on your feet here, the green man appears but the stopped traffic is allowed to turn right through the red light and run you over. To top it off, traffic turning left off the main road might not have a red light to stop at so it is also allowed to turn into the street you are crossing and run you over. In my addled eurpoean mind it's hardly worth having the little man telling you it's safe to walk. However, it's illegal to cross the street if there is a red man showing. If there isn't a red man controlled crossing, traffic has to yeild to pedestrians.
So I spent all day yesterday alternately nearly being run over by crossing with a green man showing and then making drivers angry by waiting at the side of an uncontrolled crossing untill they drove past.

They do that in France too. I think us Brits are probably the only ones with pedestrian crossing rules that actually stop traffic in the right directions! And maybe the Germans but I couldn't swear to it
